New York City Agrees to Pay $13 Million to Arrested George Floyd Protesters

According to court records filed on Wednesday, New York City has agreed to pay  $13 million to George Floyd protesters who were arrested during the 2020 demonstrations.

Key Details: About 1,400 people can expect to receive at least $9,950 under the class action settlement that was unveiled in a Manhattan federal court. The settlement does not include an admission of wrongdoing on the part of the NYPD.

Key Quote: “N.Y.P.D.’s suppression of dissent has continued through numerous mayoral administrations,” said Wylie Stecklow, an attorney for the protesters.

For Context: In the class action lawsuit, NYPD officers were accused of violating the rights of demonstrators and using unlawful policing tactics. The payouts agreed to in the settlement would be among the most expensive ever awarded in a lawsuit over mass arrests.

How the Media Covered It: The settlement was covered by sources across the political spectrum, with sources on the left noting that U.S. District Judge Colleen McMahon must approve the payouts.
